ARCHIVEs from 2008: April 12, 2008

Friday Oct 29, 2010
From the old days: an archive's been born! the tail end of the first hour of the Friday All Night Show and then most of It's My Vinyl...the show was less polished, but it's all about the music...Johnny Cash "Hurt", Fleetwood Mac, The Rutles, Billy Joel, Three Mo Tenors performing "Love Train", Paul Revere & The Raiders give you their "Kicks" written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil...The Lovin' Spoonful, The Kinks, Amy (not Aimee - an inside joke for some), Huey Lewis having a "Change of Heart" - a superb single that never had the credit it deserved, Men at Work, and other stuff (can't tell you it all or they'll be no surprise)...broadcast on April 12, 2008, just 3.5 months after my solo debut on WWUH-FM 91.3 Hartford / wwuh.org. Notes about archives: if sound quality is challenged, fast forward yourself out of it...if a show is predominantly distorted, it won't be uploaded, but if only an isolated section is rough, either ride it out, or fast forward....it's worth it to hang in there!

It is believed that this is the Band Wagon that was broadcast on September 4, 2010, 5am-6am. You'll hear unsigned artists like Resurrection (from Rochester NY, circa 1985, from the album WCMF Homegrown 5) (hey, guess who wrote this one?*), Killoran (from New Jersey), Lisa Redford from the UK, Anna Zoe from NYC (originally from Erie, where the gods live), Kevin Bents (who spent time in the Spin Doctors and produces people in Deutchland), and a former Bandwagon artist (now signed to Jack Holzman's Cordless Records), NYC's Jupiter One with the track "Countdown". *John Kralles-Sam Scozzari (c) 1985 Salmon John Music BMI and Sam Scozzari Publishing BMI

It is strongly believed that this is the latter half of the 3am-4am hour on September 4, 2010 (I couldn't find a Sharpee in the studio and never labeled the CD). It provides a half hour of new alternative music that was released between Jan and May 2010. For some reason, the first half of the program is not recorded.

October 9, 2010 - JL's birthday continued: 4am-5am...slipping into vinyl, we feature the "She Loves You"/"I'll Get You" 45 on Swan Records (Capitol turned down the Beatles when offered to them from their sister EMI label in England, Parlophone, so George Martin and Brian Epstein had to shop them onto small indie labels...yes, the Beatles were at one time an Indie Band! I used two pressings of the single to broadcast the show...one, from my wife, Lois', personal collection, and one from mine, which I believe is counterfeit, because it sounds so damn good! (like it was pressed in the late 1970s). Both tracks were in mono, and they don't differ that much from the mono version of the US album, The Beatles' Second Album (which was actually their third album because Capitol wouldn't sign them!!!!!!!!). Other cool stuff includes "Well Baby Please Don't Go" featuring JL, Yoko, and Frank Zappa with the Mothers of Invention. This track is included on J&Y's Sometime In New York City album. On vinyl, it was a 2-record set. Cassette and 8-track versions assigned each volume a separate title and separate catalogue number. Who knows why? The LP is SVBB-3392, and the tapes are Sometime In New York City (3393) and Live Jam (3394), but are packaged as one specially priced double album. The CD deletes two of the live tracks featuring YO on lead vocals (due to time or space?), but likely we can expect those tracks to appear again someday..digitally, we hope...The Live Jam album sleeve resembles The Mothers' Live at The Fillmore East album cover, with John Lennon's hand-written edits on the cover (to resemble the contents of this album, so it's believed to have come from the same concert) Also, two tracks from The Plastic Ono Band - Live Peace In Toronto 1969, released on Apple prior to the breakup of the Beatles, and featuring JL, YO, Eric Clapton, Klaus Voorman, and Alan White (drummer for Yes)...the rocker stuff on Side 1 is alot of fun. Other tracks included Beatles, "Mrs. Lennon" (from Fly), and Ringo. happy birthday John...

October 9, 2010, would have been John Lennon's 70th Birthday....3am-4am: you'll hear covers of JL song by Black Tie, Roxy Music (their version of "Jealous Guy" shot to #1 in the UK), and the 1990s version of "Fame" by David Bowie, written by Bowie, Bowie's long time guitarist, Carlos Alomar, and John Lennon...I think I hear John Lennon on the track, but it's not documented to my knowledge...see what you think! More JL on the It's My Vinyl !! segment, which you can also find on this podcast site, but in a separate episode.

The Band Wagon, October 23, 2010, 5am - 6am: Unsigned artists, featuring the new release from singer/songwriter Kayte Strong, who I learned of one time at the Corn Hill Arts Festival (say 2? or 3? years ago)...oddly, she presents all covers or material written by others...there's a country/AOR feel here...of course, she's based in Nashville, so why not? Other artists featured include Cassandra Kubinski, Frank Herkimer (doing a song co-written with a one Sam Scozzari), a bona-fide Sam Scozzari demo from the forthcoming album, Some of Adam's DNA, "Driving Down", and old friend, former Rochester-based Pearl-keyboardist Jerry Magill, with a track from an unreleased demo circa 1983..the track is called "Too Many Girls In the World" and sounds nothing like Pearl...do any of you Rochesterians remember Pearl?...they had a 5-song or 3-song (I can't remember) EP in the early 80s, played a rather Hotel Lounge-cum-hard rock style that also put them into venues like the Penny Arcade, and dressed like Moderns (thin ties, black outfits, and the hair thing)...also on the program, my friend, Eric Munson, originally from Idaho and now auditioning profusely in NYC, performs a demo of "Steppin' Out" (the Broadway hit, not Joe Jackson), and you can find him at NewYorkTenor.com, if you so wish.

October 23, 2010, 4am-5am: Eileen requests Badfinger, so we gave her "Shine On" from Badfinger, an album that once had a working title of For The Love of Money, produced by George Martin protege, Chris Thomas, and is the first release from the band on the Warner Bros label (circa 1973 or 74). It was actually released before their final Apple album, Ass, due to some problems over at Apple, and at one point, both albums kept each other off the charts. Note: Ass was re-released on CD this week on October 25, 2010, digitally remastered. "Shine On" is one of the few gems co-written by both Peter Ham and Tommy Evans, the other most notable was the Nilsson and Mariah Carey hit, "Without You" (ah, we'll play it some other time)...The show continues with Side 1 of the Warner/Reprise Loss Leader, Hot Platters, featuring music from Deep Purple, John Baldry (produced by Rod Steward and Elton John), Labelle (at that time marketed as a "trio" featuring Patti Labelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sara Dash), a fairly undeveloped artist, Redeye, and a non-album single from T Rex. The show continues with The Pixies Three from an actual Mercury 45 RPM single, an actual Sun Records 45 RPM single by Carl Perkins ("Blue Suede Shoes"), and more.

October 23, 2010, 3am-4am: fading in from Underground Radio with John Scott, continuing with WWUH's fall fundraiser: goal $25K, actual $36K...special thanks to all of our listeners....especially Eileen from Ontario NY who pledged for the show. Scott fades in with Leonard Cohen's live version of "Alleluia", and the show continues into Kayte Strong's version of "Yesterday Once More", The Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night"/"I Should Have Known Better" 45 RPM single, an Apple pressing of the original Capitol record, in mono (this version is different than that which is found on the A Hard Day's Night soundtrack album on United Artists Records) The show continues with tracks from Toto IV and a bluegrass band called Ironhorse.
